Youtorial ScreenFlow Competition Winners Announced!

America’s Next Top Guru Competition Winners

Back in early February, we announced a fun contest in conjunction with Telestream, which produces ScreenFlow, the premier screencasting software for Mac users. We are excited to finally announce the winners of the Telestream and Youtorial “America’s Next Top Guru” competition, in which entrants had to create 10-15 minute youtorials (interactive video tutorials) specifically using ScreenFlow. Gurus and other entrants used Youtorial’s tools along with ScreenFlow software to create creative youtorials that featured cool software tips.

First place goes to travel blogger and language enthusiast Ryan Moorhead, for his comprehensive youtorial on LiveMocha, “the world’s most popular language learning site.” Ryan will recieve $100 worth of Youtorials plus a  suite of Telestream desktop products (an $816 value) comprised of ScreenFlow ($99), Wirecast ($449), Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD ($179) and Videocue ($89).

You Can Still Enter to Be America’s Next Guru!

Dear gurus,

Since February is a short month, Youtorial and Telestream have decided to extend the America’s Next Guru contest an extra week! We want to give entrants more time to work on their short ScreenFlow youtorials, and we also want to reach out to entrants who need our help (see next section).

While we have extended the deadline, there are still less than 10 days left to work on submissions. The original deadline was March 4, 2011, but you now have until March 11, 2011 (next Friday) to finish Youtorializing and to submit your edited ScreenFlow youtorials!

Are you still working on your entry? We can help!

The youtorials we received are looking good, and we’d like to offer a helping hand to anyone currently working on an entry. Need help? Please fill out our Youtorial signup form to express your interest in the competition and let us how we can help you. We’ll respond to any questions as soon as possible!

Turbogears: The Fastest Way to Start Building Dynamic Web Apps

This Quick Software Tip goes out to all of the aspiring web developers out there looking for a fast way to start building dynamic web applications.

Why would I want this?  You want to build the next great social network.  Or maybe you just want to see what this web dev thing is all about.  Static pages are a thing of the past, and you want to make your foray into building dynamic sites with a solid backend.  Unfortunately, moving past the world of static HTML, CSS and javascript can be pretty daunting!

Why should I use Turbogears to get started?

I’m not going to discuss the benefits of Turbogears for full-scale production web applications (we use it at Youtorial), but I will say that it is great for beginners. First off, we will literally be up and running with a dynamic website in under 20 minutes.  Turbogears is configured from the beginning around a light-weight web server and database (paster and sqlite), which means you don’t need to hassle with installation and configuration of Apache and MySQL/PostGRE/etc!

Second, it runs on python, which seems to be the language of choice for new programmers lately.  That means you can jump right in and start applying those fundamentals you’ve been learning without having to pick up a new syntax

Whether you simply want to start learning quickly or you’re tired of PHP and want to give python a try, Turbogears is a good option for you.

I want this.  Show me how to set it up!  As usual, the awesome software tool I just explained will be incredibly easy to set up, because there’s a youtorial for it!  This one is based on a text tutorial created by the Turbogears team, which is linked at the beginning of the youtorial.  Just click the large launcher button below to install the player from our dedicated installation page, complete with extensive troubleshooting tips.  There is a discussion board if you would like to discuss with each other/ask questions/post feedback.

America’s Next Top Guru Competition

Youtorial, Meet Screenflow

We’re excited to announce a new contest in conjunction with Telestream, who creates Screenflow, the premier screencasting software for Mac users. You will find more details below, but we are calling on individual screencasters and software companies to create a youtorial using Screenflow. By entering, you’ll have the chance to win some great Telestream software, plus free access to some high quality software tutorials, AND you’ll have the opportunity to earn revenue on future tutorials that you make for Youtorial!  We even have a special prize for the top entry by a software company, and entering will be a great way to promote your company’s software!

As most of you probably know, Youtorial is a tech startup that has created an innovative new software training platform, which gives software experts special tools to create, share, and sell their own interactive Youtorial screencasts on the Youtorial Market.

Youtorial’s software platform allows users to follow experts in interactive screencasts, making it much easier for users to learn high-tech software. To provide users with the best content out there, Youtorial wants to give independent screencasters the opportunity to create and sell content on the Youtorial Marketplace.

YOUR MISSION

Create a Youtorial – an interactive screencast that teaches a cool software or tech tip utilizing the Youtorial and Screenflow platforms.

We also want software companies to show off their great apps, and we’ve got a great prize for the best company youtorial.  Company entrants should create a youtorial teaching how to use a great feature of their software, or even just walk us through getting set up.

PRIZES

While we will allow users to vote on their favorite youtorials, Youtorial and Telestream will make the final decision. We will award the top 5 entrants.

First Place: Youtorial will feature the winning entry and its creator on the home page. In addition, the 1st place winner will receive $100 worth of Youtorials plus a  suite of Telestream desktop products (an $816 value) comprised of ScreenFlow ($99), Wirecast ($449), Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD ($179) and Videocue ($89).
The top four (4) runners-up will each receive $25 worth of Youtorials and their choice of any one of the Telestream products above (up to $449 value).

Top Software Company Entry: In addition to being featured on the Youtorial homepage, the winning company will win a 1-year license of the Youtorial platform(a $1000 value).  Take your help and support to the next level by embedding youtorials directly on your site and tracking viewer analytics!

Additionally, Youtorial will be recruiting high quality entrants as “Youtorial gurus”, with the opportunity to create content and earn revenue on the Youtorial Market.

ELIGIBILITY

We would like entries from anyone who has a love for software and screencasting. Even if you’re not a an screencasting expert or youtorial guru, don’t be deterred from entering. We would love to get some fresh perspective from software enthusiasts. Don’t worry if you have never used Screenflow or don’t own the software - you can download demo version for free, and Youtorial will help you export your entry without a watermark!

For requirements, details on how to enter, judging, and the fine print, check out the official competition on the Screenflow Blog.

Get your youtorials done by March 4th! Good luck and have fun!

Synergy + Youtorial Will Blow Your Mind

This is the first of a series of free youtorials I’ll be posting, filled with quick software tips that you can easily accomplish through the power of Youtorial.  First up, Synergy.

Why would I want this?  If you own two or more computers (2 macs, 2 windows, 1 mac/1 linux, 1 windows/1 laptop, etc), this is for you.  You most certainly have struggled with KVM switches and wiring headaches in order to share a single keyboard and mouse across computers.

The Synergy Solution.  Fortunately, there is a solution to this headache. Synergy allows one computer’s keyboard and mouse to manage multiple computers, all over your wired or wireless network.  The best part? All you need is a piece of software.  Oh, and both computers need to be on the same local wired or wireless network.

What’s even better, I’ve created a Youtorial to show you how to set it up (and if you want to save yourself a headache, I’d recommend using it).  Once it is set up you realize that you can literally copy and paste from a Mac to a PC, all with this handy utility, you will gleefully prance around the room, praising the heavens.  Hopefully nobody is watching.

I want this.  Show me how to set it up!  Just click the image below to install the player from our dedicated installation page, complete with extensive troubleshooting tips  There is also a discussion board if you would like to discuss with each other/post questions/give feedback.
